Small Church Clarity: A View from the Facilitator

One of the phrases we often use in the Ministry Solutions department at Lutheran Church Extension Fund (LCEF) is “Moving Your Ministry Forward According to God’s Will.” We recognize that ministry takes place in all shapes and sizes. Yet churches often fall into the comparison trap when it comes to size: “If only we were as big and resource-rich as the larger churches” or “Our goal is to be more like the bigger churches.” As a result, small churches may feel discouraged, demoralized, isolated and immobilized. How can they move forward?
Small Church Clarity with Ministry Solutions is a four-session workshop designed to embrace smaller congregations where they are and help them see that they are not alone. Yes, they can move forward in ministry according to God’s will. A key and inspiring insight from my first Small Church Clarity workshop came from LCMS Eastern District President John Pingel’s devotion. He said, “Stop trying to be the large church. Be the best small church you can be!” Small churches have a unique and vital role in their communities, and Small Church Clarity helps them recognize and embrace their strengths rather than compare themselves to larger congregations.
We set the table for churches to talk to one another, sharing what they have learned about their congregation and their surrounding community. We open doors for conversation, collaboration and encouragement.
However, this is not “just talk.” Practical planning and a structured framework help churches take tangible steps toward a hopeful future. Each congregation leaves with concrete plans and goals for the coming year. As a result, they feel empowered. Connections are also strengthened with district presidents and their staff, allowing them to see how God continues to work in their part of the district.
Leading Small Church Clarity has been an incredible journey of empowering congregations to embrace their mission with confidence. Small churches are the backbone of our faith communities, offering close-knit fellowship and a deep commitment to Word and Sacrament ministry. LCEF Ministry Solutions is honored to walk alongside them.
