Caring for God’s Temple

How we can celebrate wellness as an expression of faithful stewardship and gratitude

Caring for our bodies is not only practical—it is deeply spiritual. Scripture reminds us, “Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit … you are not your own (1 Cor. 6:19–20).” What God has lovingly created and redeemed, He also calls us to steward well. Our physical and spiritual wellness are woven together, each influencing the other. With simple intentional choices, we can honor God with our bodies even in the fullest, busiest seasons of life.

Physical wellness is more than a checklist or a short-term goal. It is a lifelong calling shaped by daily habits and mindful care. In Lutheran schools, this understanding shows up in tangible ways. Athletics is one of many avenues through which students learn to honor the bodies God has given them. Whether through physical education classes or extracurricular sports, students grow not only in strength and skill but also in character, discipline and faith.

On the field, in the gym and at every practice, young people experience daily opportunities to learn teamwork, perseverance, humility and respect—always within a Christ-centered community. Coaches model Christlike leadership, guiding students to win and lose with grace and to see every moment of training as stewardship of the gifts God has entrusted to them. Through these experiences, students begin to understand the fullness of Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 6—that their bodies truly are temples of the Holy Spirit.

Yet physical wellness is not reserved for students or athletes. It is never too late for anyone to focus on caring for their body. Wellness doesn’t require joining a gym or participating in team sports. It can be as simple as a daily walk or finding small ways to move throughout the day.

Physical wellness is possible, even in the midst of full schedules, responsibilities and celebrations. With intention, gratitude and prayer, we can honor God by nurturing the bodies He has entrusted to us.

Start Today

1. Treat movement as stewardship, not obligation
Shift your mindset from “I have to exercise” to “I get to care for the body God gave me.”

2. Build consistency through routine
Place your shoes by the door, schedule movement into your calendar or set a reminder.

3. Pair physical habits with spiritual ones
Pray during your walk or listen to Scripture while stretching. Body and spirit can grow together.

4. Involve your community
Walk with a friend, join a team at church or encourage family members to join you in movement.

5. Practice grace with yourself
Some seasons feel busy or heavy. Remember: stewardship isn’t about striving: it’s about faithfulness. Start again tomorrow, and keep going.
